Pope Leo XIV

With great joy we welcome the election of Pope Leo.  We will be praying for him. Please read more below.

1. Leo XIV = taking a name after Pope Leo XIII who wrote the first social encyclical, our new Pope, commits himself to those issues which effect his brothers and sisters, especially the poorest.

2. He is a Pope of the Americas, rather than America. Having worked most of his life in Peru, he has a sense of the developing world, as well as the richer countries and can be a critical friend; as well as modelling the best that the America has to offer the world.

3. Pope Leo is a Missionary. Pope Francis asked ‘how can we be a synodal Church in Mission?’ A missionary Pope will answer that question, and enable the Church to reach out to the periphery and beyond itself.

His first message of peace, dialogue and building bridges is a message of unity for humanity.
