THE QUIET HERO
This weekend (6-7th June
2009) , the 65th Anniversary of the DD Landings we are proud to
give recognition to Les Boggis. Many of you will know him, especially at
8.30 mass where he is church warden.
Les was in the Royal Navy
and was in the first wave of Landing Tank Craft that landed on Utah Beach.
He was two days short of his nineteenth birthday. His LTC landed eight
hours after the beginning, on a high tide and was marooned there for three
days till another high tide floated it off. He was to make another eighteen
journeys across the Channel helping to bring supplies. Utah was one of the
American Beaches, so his LTC was full of American supplies and men. It was
all part of the Allied Invasion. Les tells me that for those three days
when he was on the beach, he was “scared stiff”, and no wonder with all the
gunfire and blasts.
Les is a very quiet and
reserved man, but it is important that he knows that we are proud of him and
all his comrades, many of whom gave their lives. Quietly and affectionately
I know many will want to shake his hand and thank him
