Wave
of generosity
THE WORLD’S economy might be in stormy waters with charities fretting about
falling donations, but parishioners in Henley-on-Thames, best known for its
annual rowing regatta, have shown that generosity is alive and well. Last
weekend a congregation of just 229 in the Oxfordshire town’s Sacred Heart
Church raised almost £9,000 in a single collection for those affected by the
drought in the Horn of Africa.
Parish priest Mgr Anthony Wilcox said he was “overwhelmed” by the response,
particularly as their numbers were down from their usual 290 due to the
summer holidays.
Although the area is home to some of the most expensive properties in
Britain, the parish website points out that most “long term residents” live
on modest incomes.
Mgr Wilcox said the £8,786 raised showed the depth of concern about the
suffering caused by the famine.
From Parish Newsletter dated 24th July 2011.
Dear
Friends,
HORN OF AFRICA DISASTER APPEAL
About
every three years we have a Disaster Push with our donations. The last one
for the Tsunami raised nearly £12,000. You have seen all the pictures and
TV. Now is the time to help. Already we have £2000.
We try
to do it all over one weekend so that we are not nagging you week by week
for an age. Please give now, using the Gift Aid method if you are a tax
payer. That means there is an extra 25% from the government. And think, if
you are a higher tax payer you get 20% back, so you might want to give a
little more.
And if
you cant make it, or are on holiday and reading this, just email us back
with a pledge and we will but the money in for you!
Thank
you on behalf of the starving in Africa.
And
bless you and your families.
Father Anthony

The
great famine that is occurring and affecting millions of people in the Horn
of Africa has been hardly mentioned these last few days by the press or TV,
so intent on reporting News International. But it is an area
that we can play a part, even though it might appear very small. The
sight of so many hungry men women and children in that part of Africa is
horrendous. Through no fault of their own: the rains have not
just failed once, but over a period of years call us to help them. The
main Aid Agencies have today (Friday 15/7/11) launched a big appeal.
Yes, it is to feed the people, but also to help them get back to their homes
and lands and feed themselves with crops they can grow. They are proud
people. But men have given up their pride to walk hundreds of
miles so that their children might be fed. The parental love is very
much to the fore.
CAFOD
(the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development) is one of those Agencies.
We use this Fund often as a vehicle for getting help to disasters.
